About the Net Worth Calculator

Net worth is the value of everything you own after subtracting everything you owe. It provides a snapshot of your overall financial position at a particular point in time.

This calculator allows you to enter common assets such as cash, investments, retirement accounts, real estate and vehicles, along with liabilities such as mortgages, credit cards, student loans and other debt.

Your estimated net worth is calculated by subtracting total liabilities from total assets.

How Net Worth Is Calculated

The basic net worth calculation is straightforward.

Total Assets minus Total Liabilities equals Net Worth.

For example, if your assets total $500,000 and your liabilities total $300,000, your estimated net worth would be $200,000.

Net worth can change over time as asset values, savings, investments, income, spending and debt balances change.

What Should You Include in Your Net Worth?

Cash & Savings Checking accounts, savings accounts and other cash balances.
Investments Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs and other investments.
Retirement Accounts 401(k), IRA and other retirement account balances.
Real Estate Current estimated market value of homes and other property.
Vehicles Approximate current market value of cars and other vehicles.
Business Interests Estimated value of ownership interests in businesses.
Mortgage Debt Remaining balance on mortgages and property loans.
Consumer Debt Credit cards, personal loans, auto loans and similar balances.

Why Track Your Net Worth?

Income tells you how much money comes into your household. Net worth shows the relationship between what you own and what you owe.

Tracking net worth over time can provide another way to evaluate changes in your financial position. Paying down debt, increasing savings or investments and changes in asset values can all affect the result.

It is useful to calculate your net worth periodically using reasonably consistent valuation methods so that changes over time are easier to understand.

This calculator provides an educational estimate based on the information entered by the user. It is not financial, investment, tax, legal or accounting advice. Asset values and liabilities can change over time, and actual values may differ from the amounts entered.
